Bluffton May Day (#156)

While I'm posting the photos that ran in the paper as well, this is another "almost" post for me. It was one of those situations that happens to every photographer: Going from one shooting situation to another and forgetting to change settings (white balance, ISO, etc.) until after the first few frames.

Bluffton University holds a May Day celebration each spring before graduation to honor that year's graduates and alumni. And the highlight of the ceremony is the Maypole Dance, performed by sixteen freshman students. And when I started to shoot the dance, I realized my camera wasn't set for outdoor shooting and the first few frames were pretty blown out. I tried hard to save this  frame, but it was too gone.

It doesn't look terrible, in my opinion, but still too blown out to run in the paper. I really like this image because it isn't the classic wide-angle of all the dancers around the pole (which I did take). The girl in teal has a great expression, it's framed well, and still shows off the dance.

After those first frames, I adjusted my settings and got some nice images. These are the two that ran in the paper:

Softball Leadership (#155)

A local softball coach holds a 10-week leadership course for girls on her team who show an aptitude for leadership. The story ran as the cover of The Lima New's Thursday XL sports edition, the top image as the cover image.

Lima Bath softball team captain Stephanie Sanders launches a ball tossed by sophomore teammate Marrianne Deppe, who took their coach's 10-week leadership class last winter, into the outfield during a fielding practice before a game.

Early Graduation (#154)

Top: "This is for us," Candace Nathan whispers to her mother Lisa after leaning in to kiss her cheek Sunday afternoon at their downtown Lima home. Lima Senior High School, with help from Nathan's aunt and sister, held a private graduation ceremony for Nathan and her family due to her mother's failing health. Both mother and daughter teared up as they held the diploma together.
Middle: Cora Ingram, a campus protection officer at Lima Senior High School, helps adjust Candace Nathan's shirt collar before an early, private graduation ceremony for Nathan's family. Nathan's mother is in failing health and the family was uncertain if she'd make it to the school's official graduation in June. Ingram has been a friend of the family for a long time. "I know every last one of them," Ingram said.

Bottom: Lee Fisher shakes hands with Sandy Hower, a member of the retired united auto workers, and his wife Sharon who works for the Ford Lima Engine Plant at a speaking appearance Saturday afternoon at the Lima UAW. The Hower's described themselves as "concerned citizens" who are supporters of Fisher, due in part to his stance on bringing jobs back to Ohio.

An American Township firefighter disengages the battery of a sport utility vehicle that hit a Harley Davidson motorcycle in a chain-reaction accident Friday night at Robb Avenue and Cole Street. The driver of the SUV turned in front of a car and was hit, causing her to hit the motorcycle. The motorcycle driver, 44-year-old John Druckemiller, was taken to Lime Memorial Health System with injuries to his leg.
