Up (#137)

I hate speaker shots. I hate shooting them and I hate that papers publish them. They are boring and repetitive. But sometimes it's worth it. Bob Peterson, co-director and writer of Academy Award Winning Pixar animated film "Up" and graduate of Ohio Northern University, spoke on campus Monday night. He was funny, smart and inspiring. He told stories about his college experience, his family and his journey working at Pixar Animation Studios. Sometimes it was hard to shoot cause I was laughing so much. The Ohio Northern gym has a track around the top, and I was granted limited time to shoot up there while Peterson was talking. With the giant screens portraying the "Up" character Russel, Peterson's hand on the laptop and the crowd along the bottom, I thought this was a wonderful and graphic alternative to the normal speaker shot. While I turned it into designers, they chose a more classic "speaker shot."

It's ok. It's not a bad shot. Nice art on the screen behind him, strong hand motion, in focus... but it's a speaker shot.

Fire (con't) (#127)

Ok, I was mistaken last night. This is the image that ran dominant on today's front page. Here are some facts about the fire:

The firemen arrived on the scene a little before 8:30 p.m. last night.
The house was over 15,000 sq. feet and was valued at over $1 million.
Two people were treated for smoke inhalation, the owner of the house and his young daughter.

This image ran secondary in black and white on the jump page.

FIRE (#126)

At approximately 8:50 this evening, I got a call from my fellow Lima intern, Jay. Fire. Address. I grabbed shoes, my cameras and ran. I could see the smoke over a mile away. I got to the scene and there was still a house. When I left, there wasn't.

About 10 minutes after I got to the scene, the fire chief pulled me aside and said, "You're gonna get more pictures than you'll even need on this one. This one's going to the ground." The above photo was chosen for dominant art on the front of tomorrow's Lima News. The following are a few of hundreds of photos I took at the scene.
