West Street Fire (#151)

Last Tuesday, I left my apartment early to stop at the bank before work. As I checked traffic before pulling out of the lot, I noticed a cloud of black smoke hanging in the sky. I decided to turn toward the smoke, the opposite direction from work. As I called my boss to see if anything had come over the scanner, an ambulance and an emergency vehicle came speeding up behind me, followed closely by a firetruck. I followed them to West St. where a small house had caught fire. The owner and his son were in the house when it started, but were warned by neighbors and made it out safely. The owener's wife was a work when it started, but arrived home to see her home in flames. She collapsed in hysterics. The house, worth $43,000, was ruined.

Horsin' Around (#150)

Ron Blubaugh, of Lima, drives a team of Beligian draft horses, Ruby and Camille, as they pull a late 1800s-style plow Sunday afternoon at the Allen County Farm Park in Bath Township. Blubaugh, a member and former president of Area Horses in Harnesses, worked all weekend with the group to plow two fields on the property using only antique farm implements. The fields will be planted with corn to be used for the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District's corn maze in the fall.

Cinderella's Closet (#147)

Cinderella's Closet was an event that matched donated prom dresses to high school girls in need all over Allen County. A local Lima couple, Don and Linda Bruns, got the idea from a similar drive happening in Florida. Linda, a former high school teacher, got some friends together and started collecting dresses this past October. When the event actually happened, Saturday April 10, the group had over 300 dresses in all different colors and sizes for girls to choose from. And the dresses were given away, free of charge.
